Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The semiannual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 for community members to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs for proper disposal at the John Lippitt Public Works Center, 1800 Maxwell Road. Liquids, needles or sharps cannot be accepted — only pills or patches. The event is hosted by the city of Chula Vista Office of Sustainability, Chula Vista Police Department and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reduce accidental poisonings, misuse and abuse of old outdated medications. Annual Spring Street Fair

The 39th annual Encinitas Spring Street Fair is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27-28 in downtown Encinitas. The event, sponsored by Ting Internet, features more than 450 vendors, three entertainment stages and 25 bands, a beer garden and children’s rides. The beer garden will be open from noon to 5 p.m. both days, selling wine, craft beer, organic hard kombucha, coffee and mocktails. Bands will also be performing at the Lumberyard Courtyard stage, and up-and-coming stars will entertain crowds at the Hansen’s Community Stage. Electra Bike is sponsoring a free Bike Valet service at each end of the festival at D Street and J Street. Salute to Young Musicians Concert

The Coastal Communities Concert Band, an award-winning symphonic band of more than 75 musicians from throughout San Diego County, directed by Tom Cole, will be joined by nearly 30 high school students in its Salute to Young Musicians Concert at 2 p.m. April 27 at the San Dieguito Academy Gymnasium, 800 Santa Fe Drive. Students from La Costa Canyon High School, Torrey Pines High School, Canyon Crest Academy and San Dieguito Academy are slated to perform with the band. ‘Honoring our Citizen Soldiers’ theme of gala

Vista-based nonprofit Las Valientes, God’s Heart Ministry, will hold a gala fundraiser, “Honoring our Citizen Soldiers,” starting at 5 p.m. June 8 at the Woman’s Club of Escondido, 751 S. Rose St. The nonprofit was established 23 years ago on May 5, and has helped 150-200 local men and women each year, who are victims of domestic violence. Several years ago, the nonprofit started helping military members with financial needs to prevent homelessness. The keynote speakers will be Anthony P. A San Dieguito River Park Bioblitz: Biodiversity Expedition starts at 9 a.m. April 27 at the Old Coach Staging Area, 14225 Highland Valley Road, and 9 a.m. April 28 beginning at Clevenger Canyon. The free event features a friendly competition with exploration of the biodiversity of the San Dieguito River Valley. The hands-on expedition gives participants a chance to learn about various plants and animals living in this watershed home while collecting vital data on species in San Diego County. The event is part of the City Nature Challenge, an international event that started out as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, using the iNaturalist app which can be downloaded to a smart device. Altrusa International Foundation gives flood relief aid to area families

The Altrusa International of Southern CA Virtual Club gave a $5,000 grant to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA to help families in southeastern San Diego who suffered from the floods earlier this year. The grant comes from the Altrusa International Foundation, which supports Altrusa clubs in their efforts to help their communities. The local Altrusa club decided to offer this disaster relief after hearing about efforts the Robinson Family YMCA’s leaders were making to bring the community together to support families in need after the floods. Children’s Book Party in Balboa Park

    Senior center celebrates International Dance Day

    The Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, will celebrate International Dance Day on April 29 with a live dance performance by the Toe Tappers from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch. A $4 contribution is suggested for guests 60 and older and $8 for guests 59 and younger. Transportation can be provided for Vista adults 60 and older with 48-hour advance notice.     Free screenings at Vista Community Clinic

    Nonprofit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts partnered with Vista Community Clinic to host several free local screening clinics throughout the year. The next screening clinic is from 4 to 6 p.m. April 24 in the pediatric department at the VCC Vale Terrace location, 1000 Vale Terrace Drive. Fresh Start Surgical Gifts provides youths with physical deformities by providing comprehensive reconstructive surgery at no cost to low income families. Walk-ins are also welcome.     Weeklong Baby Fest

    The BabyFest: A Week for Growing Families event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22-27 at Babies in Bloom, 127 Main St. The festival provides expectant and new parents with information, resources and community connections for the early stages of parenthood. Highlights include a vendor expo with exhibitors and workshops with tips on a range of topics from prenatal care and childbirth to newborn care, breastfeeding and sleep solutions. Admission is free.     Clean Energy Alliance Town Hall meeting

    The city of Vista joined the Clean Energy Alliance and will hold Town Hall meetings to discuss the switch to CEA, including rates. A vitual Zoom meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m. April 22, and a District 4 Clean Energy Alliance Town Hall is at 6 p.m. May 10 at the Morris Vance Community Room at the Vista Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive.
