impacts our life, family structures and the way we talk to our kids can impact their behavior in the future as well. a new study takes a look at

6:42 am

co-parenting and child development. joining us this morning is professor sarah schoppe-sullivan, who directs the children and parents lab at ohio state university. thank you so much for joining us. >> you're welcome. >> so co-parenting really an important term right now, right? there are so many multi-generations helping raise kids, single parents, blended families, so many configurations of families. so how does co-parenting, good, bad, challenging play a role in the child's behavior now and in the future? >> yeah, sure. so, co-parenting, you know, can involve, as you point out, parents who are, you know, married or living together and both the biological parents of the child, but it's not limited to that. i mean, basically, the principal key principle behind co-parenting is that most children are parented by more than one adult at any given time in their lives. right? and so how those individuals are able to coordinate their parenting roles, you know, what sorts of, tasks or jobs they do with

6:43 am

respect to parenting and kind of stay on the same page and be more cooperative versus getting into a lot of parenting conflicts. we know that that is important for, having children with fewer behavior problems, fewer emotional problems, both when they're young and into the future. studies that follow kids over time show that co-parenting when the two, you know, parents are present and together is hard enough as a challenge. >> do you have any advice for parents who are dealing with two households, you know, and they're they're truly co-parenting in a split relationship, and the kids are going back and forth? >> yeah, i think, you know, the best thing you can do is try to, you know, set aside differences, personal differences that you have and try to keep open lines of communication. i would say about, what how you want to raise those children together. it doesn't mean that you always

6:44 am

have to agree, because that's probably not going to happen, especially in that kind of situation. but you have to be able to resolve those disagreements amicably. and in a mature fashion, you know, so that you can recognize that your child is going to have somewhat different experiences in different households. that's kind of impossible to avoid, but that if there are conflicts that come up that you're able to resolve those without, you know, getting really hostile or involving the children in them directly, i would imagine there's some benefits to with going to different households or, you know, having the grandparents stay involved or other family members. >> what are some of the benefits of maybe these kids experiencing different parenting styles? >> yeah, i think that's a good point. and one we often don't think about, i think that children from a very young age, they learn that, you know, different people, they have different relationships with different people. you know, their relationships with, say, even like mothers and fathers are not identical. and they quickly figure out, like, you

6:45 am

know, how this person expects me to behave, how they expect our relationship to go. and so i think it's perfectly, you know, fine. and even potentially beneficial, you know, if they have a different experience at their different roles at, you know, grandma's house or different roles at, you know, an aunt's house or dad's house or something like that to a certain extent. like it helps them navigate that and figure that out because they're not going to be living in one environment their entire lives. right? they're going to have to be able to adapt and adjust. and so as long as those are all within reason and all of these parties, you know, have the child's, you know, best interests at heart, i think that can be a beneficial experience for children. >> and maybe before you go, some advice for when kids, their behavior is impacted. they're they're not adjusting well to the different households or parenting styles. what what's some advice for that? >> i mean, i think that a really great first point is to talk to your pediatrician, you know, make sure that even as life gets chaotic, that you, as it always

6:46 am

does with families and kids, but that you keep up with those regular visits and pediatrician is a great, point, first point of contact or even a school counselor to bring up. hey, something doesn't seem like it's going right, and those individuals can usually provide some good advice and connect parents to resources and give them referrals and things like that. that might be helpful to figure out if it's just a temporary thing, you know, an adjustment to a transition, or if there might be something more, you know, persistent going on there with their with the child. >> it takes a village communication, probably number one. right. >> yeah, absolutely. all right. >> thank you so much, professor sarah schoppe-sullivan, ohio state university. thank you. great, great advice. >> thank you. bye. >> thank you. time now, 646. governor newsom reportedly is considering a special legislative session to debate oil and gas regulations. the governor's office confirms the governor wants lawmakers to revisit a bill to address regulating gasoline prices.

6:47 am

earlier this month, the governor proposed legislation to require refiners to keep a minimum amount of fuel on reserve to avoid any supply shortages and higher prices. the governor's office said that a special legislative session won't be needed if lawmakers in the next few days take up the issue of tighter regulation on the oil and gas industry. the end of the current regular legislative session is this week. well, today lyft has launched a new rider verification program to help drivers verify the identities of riders. the pilot program adds a verification badge to profiles to help the drivers confirm that the riders getting into their vehicles are who they say they are. now. lyft will verify using the legal names and if information can be verified, riders may be asked to upload government id. the pilot program is being tested out in nine major cities outside of the

6:48 am

bay area. lyft hasn't said when the program will expand to other cities. well, san francisco just received a $70 million boost in state funding for affordable housing and transit improvements. the money will be going towards developing 174 new homes across 200% to 100% affordable housing projects, and the first one is near china basin at fourth and brannan. the second one is next to mclaren park. the money is coming from the affordable housing and sustainable communities program, which aims to build affordable housing with a focus on sustainability and access to transit. well, time is running out for parents to sign up for california's sun box program. it works just like cal fresh, but is for kids. during the summer months, parents can get $40 a month for food for june, july and august. most children who qualify for free or reduced

6:49 am

price school meals through a school meal of application. they're automatically enrolled. families can still sign up for the full benefits through their schools by saturday. >> the 49ers season opener is less than two weeks away. they'll face aaron rodgers and the new york jets, and there's a chance the niners will be without a couple of their own stars. the 40 niners announced brandon aiyuk was medically cleared to participate in practice yesterday, but the wide receiver decided not to suit up amid his contract dispute with the team. offensive tackle trent williams was also absent as he continues holding out for a new deal. >> i'm optimistic that things will work out with trent. i'm not sitting here knowing what day it will be. i mean, we're getting close to playing a game, so like, my mind is completely on preparing for a game without those guys, but yeah, i feel when two sides want to get a deal done and usually it happens. >> now, aiyuk could be fined $40,000 a day if he continues to miss daily team activities.

6:50 am

>> our time now. 649 later today, the oakland a's will go for a series sweep in cincinnati. the a's have been on a roll over the past month, with the second best record in the american league since mid-july. yesterday, the a's took the lead early. they had three solo home runs through six innings, but the reds battled back at home, though in the eighth inning, cincinnati was leading 6 to 5. oakland with two on and no one out. seth brown went deep, hit a three run homer and the a's won 9 to 6. now the giants are on the road in milwaukee in the second inning. a brewers fan made a tremendous catch right there. sign him up. he gets a lot of love from the other fans around him. the game was scoreless through five innings. then the giants gave up five runs in the fifth. they went on to score a run in the seventh and then two in the eighth. and they threatened to comeback. but those brewers hung on and they won the game 5 to 3. they will

6:51 am

play a series tiebreaker later today. >> time is 650. and right now we do have slowing around the bay area. let's start off with the east bay. i want to show you that 680 and highway four. highway four does have an issue now. westbound highway four coming up on the willow pass. grade so now we have some slow traffic. they're going to try and get a camera focused on it in just a bit. but right now i also want to take a look at the bay bridge that is backed up from the maze, and the traffic is slow all the way across the bridge into san francisco. if you're thinking about using the san mateo bridge, that bridge looks a little bit better to the peninsula. 651 let's talk about today's weather. and here's roberta. >> thanks, sal. we're taking a look at the estuary this morning where we have a gray slate. the cloud deck, roughly about 1300 feet. we're looking out towards the water, where the temperature right now is 56 degrees. the estuary basically separates oakland from alameda. and on the western end you have san

6:52 am

francisco. on the eastern end you have san leandro and today, everybody starting off in the 50s, except right here in fremont, 60 degrees hayward, also 60, and san jose at 60 degrees all the way through cupertino and campbell, los gatos and saratoga. today you can bank on cooler temperatures inland by four and five degrees. you will notice the difference. and then tomorrow, gray slate again, even deeper marine layer and then a blue finish with lots of sunshine this weekend. seasonal conditions return here to the bay area because we have an unseasonably hot due to high pressure over there. oh, can you see behind me here? let me get out of the way. this right here. that's an area of low pressure that's trying to nudge an easterly fashion. and that's what's enhancing our marine layer. so this morning we're kicking off with a little bit of condensation from the drizzle associated with that deepening marine layer right there around point bonita and all the way to fort cronkite this morning, also

6:53 am

just off the coast of half moon bay. the clouds do pretty much hang out at the coast all day long. we'll call it partly cloudy at moss beach and montara beach. otherwise, lots of clarity around the bay until later on tonight when we see the intrusion of that marine layer all the way, a good 5055 miles inland towards the tri valley to the north, santa rosa, and to the south all the way into the gilroy area. if you're heading to tahoe this weekend, it's going to be spectacular. 70s and 80s. and meanwhile, your travel forecast for friday for the labor day weekend, we're talking about 96 degrees at the state capitol. oh, gorgeous. in yosemite at 88 degrees 101. in fresno. and if you're heading to san diego, not seeing any kind of a warm up into the 80s until about wednesday. our temperatures today, anywhere from 66 to 93 degrees. 83 fremont, 84 degrees in napa. these temperatures are slightly above normal, but enjoy your thursday. >> all right, roberta, thank you. time now. 653 key political
